Answers do not need to be in complete sentences, except in the last question, where you are asked to compose a paragraph. 1. Select one of the poems from the chart, or a poem of your choosing (provide a copy with your polished analysis). 2. Using your annotations and responses from the chart, consider what the poem means on a figurative level (if there is a figurative level). 3. Determine the mood. Is the mood constant or does it shift? What emotion is the reader intended to feel? writing designs 4. Consider the speaker’s tone. Again, does it stay constant or is there a shift in the tone? What seems to be the speaker’s attitude toward the subject? Why might the author have used this tone? What are some specific details from the poem that indicate support for your conclusions? 5. Create a thematic statement that communicates the key idea in the poem. 6. Examine the techniques used by the poet in order to enhance the mood and/or reinforce the theme. (Look at areas where you may have jotted EQ in the margin.) Jot notes on how these devices help achieve the theme and/or mood of the poem. 7. Put all of this together in a critical response paragraph. Answer the question “What Essential Question does the poet seem to be exploring in the poem, and what poetic devices are used in order to develop this theme?”
